// 01 why chord
One app to replace the two you use now
Chord does the monthly books and the net-worth glance in one native macOS app — no cloud, no bank logins.
Local-first
Everything lives in a single SQLite file on your Mac. No cloud, no lock-in, no accounts to log into.
Keyboard-first
⌘1–⌘9 switch sections and arrow keys move through lists. The whole app works without the mouse.
Double-entry
Every transaction balances, enforced by the database. You see money in / money out — debits and credits when you want them.
Foreign currency support
USD and CAD only for now, with more currencies on the way. The Bank of Canada daily rate, with manual override, drives both the ledger and your investment values.
// 02 a tale of two tools
Your ledger and your spreadsheet, finally in one place
The ledger
A full accounting ledger keeps the books actually correct — but it's heavy to maintain, and tracking investments in one is enough to make anyone quit.
The spreadsheet
Your net worth lives in a sheet: STOCK() prices, USD converted to CAD by hand, and no single number you trust.
Chord does the monthly books and the net-worth glance, in one native macOS app. Your data stays in a single file on your Mac.

Questions, answered plainly
Is it free?
Chord is free during beta. We'll announce final pricing before beta ends, and people on the waitlist get early-supporter pricing.
Does it connect to my bank?
No. You import QFX files you download from your bank yourself. That's deliberate — no bank credentials ever reach Chord.
Where is my data stored?
In a single SQLite file on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded and there's no account to create.
Which banks work?
Any Canadian bank that can export QFX. If your bank exports QFX, Chord can import it.
Is there a mobile app?
A mobile app is planned. Today Chord is a native macOS app.
Does it do budgeting?
Yes. A Budget section (⌘5) tracks one monthly amount per category and shows budget vs actual vs variance.
Do I need an API key?
Only for EOD stock quotes. You bring your own free Marketstack or Alpha Vantage key, and Chord doesn't see it, or charge for it at the moment. Everything else works without one.
What currencies are supported?
USD and CAD only for now, with more currencies on the way. The Bank of Canada daily rate keeps both the ledger and investment values consistent.
