CAD and USD exchange rates
How Chord uses the Bank of Canada daily rate to move between Canadian and US dollars.
Last updated October 23, 2026
Chord is multi-currency by design. Every account has a native currency — CAD or USD — and postings never silently convert. Conversion happens only where a single currency is needed.
Where the rate comes from
The FX section holds the rate series. Chord uses the Bank of Canada daily rate, and you can override any day by hand:
| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| Record a manual rate | ⌥⌘X |
| Fetch / refresh rates | ⌘R |
A manual override is kept alongside the fetched rate, so you can tell which is which.
What uses the rate
- Net worth and allocation — converted to your profile's default currency at the latest stored rate.
- Balance Sheet — USD figures at the latest (spot) rate.
- Income Statement — each transaction at its own date's rate, so historical figures don't move as the rate does.
- Budgets — foreign-currency expenses at their transaction-date rate.
Account registers and individual postings stay in the account's own currency.
Cross-currency transfers
Moving money between a CAD account and a USD account posts an explicit FX adjustment so the home-currency books stay balanced. This applies to bank transfers. Investment holdings use spot-rate conversion for display only, which is consistent with current-value-only valuation.
Troubleshooting
- A USD account is missing from a total. Totals are in your profile's default currency; the account still contributes, converted at the stored rate.
- The rate looks stale or wrong. Press ⌘R in FX to fetch, or ⌥⌘X to set the day by hand.
- My total moved without any transactions. A fetched rate changed. That's expected — only the Income Statement pins each transaction to its own date's rate.
