Privacy and your data
What stays on your Mac, what leaves it, and how to turn the anonymous-usage toggle off.

Your money stays on your Mac
Chord stores everything — accounts, transactions, holdings, budgets, FX rates — in a single SQLite file on your Mac. There is no Chord account, no cloud copy, and no sync.
- No bank login. Chord never connects to your bank. You import a QFX file you downloaded yourself.
- No aggregators. No Plaid, Finicity, or MX.
- No ads, and no copy of your ledger. Your books live in a file on your Mac, so there is no Chord-held ledger to share or sell.
USD figures convert using the Bank of Canada daily rate; positions are valued with market prices you fetch through your own provider key. See CAD and USD exchange rates and Market-data keys.
What leaves your Mac
- Market data — quotes and symbol search, sent to your chosen market-data provider with your key. That key is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
- Exchange rates — the Bank of Canada daily rate.
- Anonymous usage data — optional, and on by default. It records which screens are visited and which features are used, to help improve Chord. It never includes your ledger, amounts, account names, or API keys.
The usage toggle
Open Settings ▸ General and turn off Share anonymous usage data to stop the anonymous usage reporting. Nothing else changes.
Your data, your file
Because the book is one local file, you can always export it and keep the copy. See Importing, exporting, and backups.
