Troubleshooting

Common questions and fixes while Chord is in beta.

Last updated October 23, 2026

The app won't open

  • Check that you dragged Chord into Applications and are opening it from there, not from the mounted disk image.
  • Chord is Developer ID-signed, notarized, and stapled, so it should open without a Gatekeeper workaround. If macOS still blocks it, delete the app and download the latest build again rather than reaching for a right-click-open trick.
  • Confirm you're on macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.
  • If it quits immediately on launch, it may be a database it declined to migrate. Re-launch; if it still won't open, contact support before deleting anything — your snapshots are recoverable. See Backups and restore.

My balances look wrong

Balances are always computed from your postings, so a wrong number is a wrong transaction, not a stale total. Things to check:

  • Is it a transfer? Moving money between your own accounts (including a credit-card payment) shouldn't count as spending. If it was booked as an expense, route it as a transfer instead.
  • Did the same statement import twice? It shouldn't — Chord de-duplicates on each line's FITID — but you can ⌘Z an import right after committing it.
  • Which currency? Account registers stay in the account's own currency; only net worth and reports convert. See CAD and USD exchange rates.
  • Unfold the row. Press Return on a transaction to inspect its full journal editor and memo.

Prices are paused or missing

That almost always means a market-data key issue. See Market-data keys.

A key was rejected or the Keychain prompt was denied

Open Settings ▸ Developer. Each provider card shows its own status, and a denied Keychain read offers Try again or Remove. Removing a key only forgets it — nothing about your books changes.

Importing a file didn't work

Chord accepts QFX statement exports and, for chart import, GnuCash's account CSV — not a CSV of transactions. If a file is rejected, re-export it from your bank (or GnuCash) and try again. Nothing is booked until you confirm the batch. See Importing a QFX file from your bank.

Still stuck?

Email [email protected] and tell us your macOS version and what you were doing when the problem happened. Please don't send your database unless we ask.
