Holdings, prices and crypto

Add investments as simple snapshots, keep prices fresh, and see how your portfolio breaks down.

Last updated October 23, 2026

A holding in Chord is a snapshot — a ticker, a share count, and a currency. You edit the share count when it changes instead of logging every trade. There are no lots, cost basis, or realized gains to maintain; value is always shares × current price, converted to your profile's currency.

Add a position

In the Holdings section, press ⌘N. Type a ticker or company name to search, then set the share count (fractional is fine) and the currency.

Holdings is built like a task list: account headers act as projects, and you can multi-select positions with ⇧↑ / ⇧↓. Moving positions merges rows with the same ticker.

Prices

Chord refreshes prices through your own market-data provider. Equities are end-of-day (a price is considered current for 24 hours); crypto refreshes much more often. Press ⌘R to refresh on demand, or ⌥⌘P to type a price yourself when you need an exact figure.

Live prices and ticker search need your own API key. Without one, positions sit at their last known price. See Market-data keys.

Classifications and allocation

Each security carries a few editable dimensions — asset class, region, vehicle, and sector. Chord fills these in from the provider where it can, and you can correct any of them.

Home shows how the portfolio is put together: an asset class lens, a sector lens, and a region breakdown (Canada / US / International Developed / Emerging Markets / Global). Unresolved holdings fall into Unclassified rather than being dropped.

Crypto

Crypto holdings are added as BASE-QUOTE pairs — BTC-USD, ETH-CAD, and so on. Ticker search finds them by name, quantities are fractional, and crypto gets its own slice in allocation.

Crypto prices come from your own CoinGecko key, chosen in Settings ▸ Developer along with the plan (Demo or Pro). Because crypto trades around the clock, its prices refresh far more often than end-of-day equities.
