What net worth means in Chord
The one number on Home, what goes into it, and why the books behind it always balance.
Last updated October 23, 2026
Home is built around a single figure. Here's exactly what it is.
The number
Net worth is your assets minus your liabilities, expressed in your profile's default currency:
- Cash and bank balances come from the ledger.
- Investments come from holdings valued at market value. Home shows the two parts separately: Chart of Accounts (Ledger) and Portfolio Holdings (MTM).
- Liabilities (credit cards, loans) are subtracted.
Everything is converted to your profile's currency at the latest stored rate. See CAD and USD exchange rates.
Why it's a real number, not a total you maintain
Chord is a double-entry ledger. Every transaction has two balanced sides, and the books balance to zero at all times. Net worth is derived from those postings, not kept as a separate figure — so it can't quietly drift away from the transactions underneath it.
That also means the fix for a wrong number is a wrong transaction, not a recalculation. See Accounts, holdings, and balances.
What moves the number
- A new import that categorises spending (expenses reduce net worth).
- Income that lands in an asset account.
- A price refresh on a holding.
- A new exchange rate on a USD balance.
- Adding or editing a holding's share count.
What it isn't
The number is a personal snapshot, shown for your own glance. It is not a tax figure, and it does not account for adjusted cost base or realized gains — Chord tracks current market value only.
